From the beginning to the end of the Bible the worship of the One True God is taught to be the number one priority of every child of God. Our desire is that our worship of God would be a reflection of our personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Worshipping God is demonstrated in many ways and forms throughout Scripture and yet worship is never seen as distractive or chaotic. Worship at Fusion Church is one of freedom, joy, reverence and honoring to God as we worship Him in Spirit and in Truth.
Proclaiming the Good News of eternal life through Jesus Christ to whoever will listen is one of our greatest priorities and privileges as followers of Jesus. We are commanded by Jesus in Acts 1:8 to take His message of redemption from our front door to as many doors as we can around the world. As obedient servants, we’re to use whatever means and methods available to accomplish this command and do so in such a way as to not dishonor God.
Jesus said we are to be mindful of the widows, the orphans and the poor around us and that we should do what we’re able to lessen the needs in their life. By doing this, Jesus says, we are ministering to Him bringing glory to God. Ministering to our community in this way is only one way for us to be God’s light in a dark world. Sharing the love of Jesus Christ by helping those in need is one of our top priorities at Fusion Church.
Jesus taught that there are those who “tie up heavy loads and put them on men’s shoulders”. Jesus was referring to the man-made laws that men had developed so that by upholding these laws, people could stay in ‘right standing’ with God. Jesus revealed in Matthew 11 that these ‘man-made laws’ were a burden to the people. He then gave an invitation to those who were burdened and heavy ladened to come to Him. Jesus gave a contrast to what man had done by stating that His yoke was easy and His burden was light. As followers of Jesus, we have freedom in Christ to live our lives according to His teachings. It was Jesus Who said that Truth sets us free. Being authentic in our worship and in our life as followers of Jesus is one part of what it means to be set free by God’s Truth. A priority of Fusion Church is for each of us to learn what it means to live by His truth and not by man’s religious laws.
When Jesus calls us to follow Him, it’s a followship by faith. The Bible defines faith as “being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” The Bible teaches us that we’re to walk by faith, not by sight, because “without faith, it is impossible to please God.” To be a true follower of Jesus requires us to live our lives by faith by seeking His plan for our life. To live any other way is to be outside of God’s Will for our life. “That can’t be done” is not in our vocabulary at Fusion Church when it comes to following Jesus.
Loving one another is a command by Jesus that we must obey if others are to see Jesus in us. When we love one another as Jesus loves us, those around us will know that we are followers of Jesus Christ. Hanging out with other followers of Jesus was a common thread in the New Testament church. Isolation and seclusion among followers of Jesus is not found in the Bible. The community seen among first century followers of Jesus demonstrates their bond of love, their common purpose and the devotion that true followers of Jesus should have to one another due to their personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
The purpose of Fusion church is to fulfill the two great commandments given by Jesus Christ. Jesus said to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” and to “Love your neighbor as yourself.” There is no greater commandment than these.’” Mark 12:30-31 (NIV). By fulfilling the great commandments, we will also fulfill the great commission which is to introduce our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ to as many people as possible through as many methods as feasible for the goal of leading them to eternal salvation in Jesus Christ. We are then commanded to baptize them and teach them the absolute truths of God’s Word. This is the purpose for which we have been brought together as Fusion Church.
I was born on December 18,1958 in Tulsa, Oklahoma and was immediately given up for adoption to two loving parents. I was raised in a blue-collar family who taught me that hard work never hurt anyone. My parents, though not followers of Jesus, taught my adopted brother and me good morals and to be honest in all our dealings. I remember going to church every so often up until I was around eight years old. From then on, we slowly became the “two times a year” family. Due to this type of up-bringing, I never knew what the Gospel of Jesus Christ was, much less what it meant. My dad was a good dad who took his family camping every weekend in the summer time and took my brother and me hunting in the fall. We were raised in the country and even rodeoed as young boys growing up.
I was an athlete all through Junior High and High School. I threw the discus in track and won many metals, including two state metals. I also played basketball through those years. I started on the varsity team throughout my high school years and received many honors as a senior including an All State alternate position in the All State games. I went to play basketball at Claremore College and then on to Northeastern State University. I had a fulfilling athletic career of which I will always cherish.
On September 23, 1980, I gave my life to Jesus Christ. I was a senior at Northeastern State University when I heard the entire Gospel of Jesus for the first time. I knew that’s what I wanted to do and was soon baptized at First Baptist Church in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. A little less than a year later I married Tonya Scarbrough on August 15, 1981 in Owasso, Oklahoma. At that time, both of us were in our last year of college and lived in married housing on the campus of Northeastern State University. Both of us graduated in 1982 and moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma to begin our careers.
One goal we set as newlyweds was to have Tonya home once we began to have children so that she would be home to raise our children. Two months before our first child in February of 1985, God provided me with a job which paid enough money for Tonya to quit her job and come home. I had been in sales in the secular work place for 10 years at the time I entered seminary, 7 of the 10 in sales management. I also had a small delivery business with a partner within our first 3 years for almost a year before we closed it due to under capitalization. That was our life until we left for seminary in May of 1992.
Upon graduation from seminary in August of 1994, my wife and I went to Montana as church planters and were there for 7 years. God planted a very successful church which continues to do very well to this day. We then came to Fort Gibson in September of 2001 where we pastored for 4 1/2 years. It was a very good work which again, God did a great job. Tonya and I felt God tugging our hearts to leave another successful work to begin another new work. However, this time, the new work was to target the 18-30 year old group of adults. It was June 2006 that we began meeting with a core group of people that wanted to be a part of the new work. Great days are in store for the new work we call Fusion Church.
Jesus Christ is the most significant person in my life because He is my personal Lord and Savior. My utmost goal is to please Him and serve Him according to His Will for my life. The next most significant person in my life is my wife Tonya. She is my partner in life, my counselor, and my right-hand in our ministry. Because we put Jesus at the center of our marriage from the beginning, we have been able to overcome the obstacles that life and the world has thrown our way. My goal is to please her to the best of my ability, though I fail more than what I would like to admit.
According to God’s command, our number one priority in life is to love Him. Our second priority in life is to love one another as Jesus loves us. If we do not know how Jesus loves us, how can we love one another? I want people to know that Jesus loves them no matter what they have done in their life, and He wants them to follow Him. This is what I’m all about.
Keeping the Faith – Dwayne
Fusion Church was started with young adults as its focus. The vision to reach those from 18 to 30 years of age with the good news of Jesus and not religion is our priority. Fusion began meeting with a core group of four people in March 2006 in the living room of the pastor. Three months later the core group had grown to eight. On the first Sunday in June 2006 twenty people met in a building that had been vacant for eight years. The work to renovate the building was begun and a vision to establish a facility that would be appealing to young adults was given.
The renovation would take almost nine months and on Easter Sunday 2007, Fusion Church was officially launched. Though the renovation took longer than what we had hoped, the end result has been one that catches the attention of all who enter.
When a person first enters the building the coffee shop atmosphere sets a welcoming and relaxing mood. Free coffee, cappuccinos, lattes, fresh baked cookies and veggies with bar tables and chairs make fellowship desirable.
The worship center is not typical at all with its metal walls, metal ceiling and concrete floor. A high tech sound-booth makes the worship experience very nice with an overhead projection system complimenting the experience. The music is an assortment of styles including rock, jazz, blues, ragae and contemporary with total focus on worshipping our Lord Jesus. Our wide range of styles provide for a very unique but not chaotic worship experience.
Even with Fusion’s focus being on young adults, people of all ages are seen at any given worship service. Fusion is a place where followers of Jesus of all ages can use their God-given talents and spiritual gifts to love and experience God!
